Remember, the first step is to do whatever is INSIDE the parentheses.

 

13 - (4 + 2) = ?

13 - 6 = 7

 

Look at the difference if the parentheses are grouping a different part of the equation:

 

(13 - 4) +2 = ?

9 + 2 = 11
